Looking into the future it appears that AI vocals Music are gaining a lot of popularity. Could you agree with taking a less than stellar vocal track and replacing it with a top pro AI generated vocal track is morally correct? Consider, this is perhaps in the same realm as using a pitch correction software like Autotune for a singer who needs help staying in key. Or using the editor the Audio Mix Engineer has to fix timing issues. I have been experimenting with AI voice generated software for a while now and here is my conclusion.
The ability to fool the average listener with AI is now here. Is it conceivable that one day it will be as popular a tool as Autotune? Yes, these days it will take less talent to achieve great vocal results than a mere decade ago. We have been moving in that direction and it will only continue. Currently with the proper software I can swap out one voice for another all while having around fifty plus vocalists of many genres to choose from at my fingertips. The software giant Sonarworks has a plugin called Sound ID Voice AI that fits perfectly into a recording studios DAW (Digital Work Station) computer. It is still improving with issues like rendering time and slight artifacts but it is the future I hate to say. Producers can now be looking to release songs without even hiring singers, this is now a reality. There are even instances where Producers have created bands that don't even exist! Yes completely AI generated bands including the songwriting, instrument playing, bios, and even photos of the band members who are not even real people!
Live performances of these AI generated songs will be also one day be used in the future as computers become more powerful. It's crazy to think that one day we may really never know who is singing the songs even in live venues! It is true that lipsyncing has been used for a while now, however this is taking it to an all new level. The artist you hear in the recorded song isn't even the artist that you will see performing live, pretty disappointing to me. However AI is here, and will effect and even eliminate many professions. We must as Artist, Engineers and Producers accept it and figure out the best ways to keep the art of music making as real as possible.
I have always looked at the future as something to embrace, I just have to get used to it that talented singers spending years of vocal lessons can now be replaced by inexpensive software versions offering multiple options. It is AI and it is another piece of being human and genuine that will be impacted. It is sad but it is in the future, sticking our heads in the sand will not help.
